Below are responses from local Syracuse middle and high school students generated from environmental writing workshops hosted by Write Out.
Rayan
I am sitting waiting for the night.
Hoping not to miss a night
Looking out the window seeing if
anyone is out.
I start to see family
the tables and chairs are up still hoping not
to miss a night.
I come out seeing the moon and stars
the sunflowers seeds that I love.
And something I love is
seeing my friends and family,
but sadly we all moved and some
of us still think of the nights
we had together.
Hibak - My “Happy Home”
A home is when you feel comfortable and happy and everyone feels safe and loved. Home is a starting place for homes and dreams, where we can share beautiful memories with family, annoying siblings, and dirty pets, parents that constantly need your help and alone times. Homes are meant to be filled with everything. Electricity flowing through every electronic: phones to TVs, computers to iPad that's what makes a health home clean walls, clothes, and furniture is what makes a healthy home exercising, clean dishes, good relationships, music, relaxing, and respect. A healthy home is where you can turn to your family and laugh and cry together. A healthy home is where you can feel good, know that you are safe and be you. A healthy home is where you can drink and eat clean, healthy food and water. A healthy home is where you can go to the bathroom and two minutes later your siblings act like they have ants in their butts, knock on the door like the FBI. A healthy home is where you and your family laugh with each other and not at each other. A healthy home is where you can feel happy within yourself.
Saadia, 13, The Cold or Hot House
When I first walk into the house I see the TV playing and someone sitting on the couch. I also see the fire place.
When I first walk into the house, I hear someone. I also hear a spoon and a cup hitting against each other.
When I first walk into the house I smell hot chocolate. In the house there’s a room. A room that’s warm, but not too warm. A room that has a fluffy blanket. But in that room there’s someone in it, someone who looks peaceful. Someone who is sleeping. But when people first walk into the house, they might see a house that is too warm for them. Or a room that is too quiet for them. They might even see a house that is way too hot for them. They might even see a house full of boring people who would rather stay home and sleep instead of wanting to play outside in the snow. When they first walk in, they could see a house they love. A house they think is for them. A house that could relax in instead of overthinking.
The Perfect house for them.
